Sensational hands-on success 2009-10-12 Skills Yorkshire and the Humber a sensational hands-on success This year’s Skills Yorkshire and the Humber event was a great success with thousands of visitors receiving inspirational career and skills advice from 70 organisations. Over 8,000 visitors including the regional Minister, the Rt Hon Rosie Winterton MP, enjoyed interactive demonstrations including spending time with apprentices on the Apprenticeships stand to highlight the importance of skills and training in helping young people get on at work and in life.

Ms Winterton, who is also Minister for Regional Economic Development and Coordination, was also keen to show that Apprenticeships greatly benefit businesses, and held a seminar for regional employers to officially launch the National Apprenticeships Service (NAS) in Yorkshire and the Humber.

Rosie Winterton MP was very impressed with Skills Yorkshire and the Humber and said: “As Regional Minister, promoting and encouraging the development of skills has always been one of my top priorities. It is vital for economic growth that businesses have staff with the right training and abilities. That’s why I am delighted to meet young apprentices who clearly have the commitment and enthusiasm to gain the skills to improve their job prospects and give them a stronger sense of direction.”

Nick Wilson, Regional Director, National Apprenticeship Service said: “I’m delighted that the Minister has shown her support for Apprenticeships and joined us today to see first hand the wealth of exciting Apprenticeship opportunities that are available for young people. We’ve also heard from regional employers NG Bailey and Fosters Bakery, who are embracing Apprenticeships as a way to develop people with the right skills to help businesses succeed, particularly in the current recession.”

Sponsored by the NAS and supported by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), Skills Yorkshire and the Humber brought together under one roof advice and information for school leavers together with the chance to see live demonstrations and try out activities typical of different careers.

Students were able to clamber inside a tank or scale a climbing wall with the Army, as well as have fun testing their reactions on the giant BATAK game. Many learned about further and higher education courses at regional and national colleges and had a go, they stencilled a wall with Leeds College of Building and made badges with Leeds College of Art, built a human jigsaw with the University of Southampton, made floral creations with Doncaster College, enjoyed the nail bar at White Rose Beauty Colleges, read the news on camera with Leeds City College and investigated a crime scene with Sheffield College.

The careers information ranged from uniformed services to lawyers, civil engineers to actors, beauty therapists to accountants and hundreds of other career and job roles. Many visitors were surprised by the different routes they could take to get a great career.

The event ran for two days and almost 8,000 students came along with their schools and colleges during school hours, in addition many visited for a second time during the evening opening. Aimed at families, over 1,000 visitors came along between 5pm and 7pm on Wednesday and found it a really great experience. Mums and Dads had fun trying out the interactive demonstrations, whilst learning about the diverse range of opportunities available for their teens. The evening opening gives families the chance to really help their young people, sometimes they are shy and just need a helping hand when meeting potential employers. The exhibitors certainly enjoy meeting whole families.

Spectacular stage performances were showcased throughout the event from students studying across the region and visitors enjoyed stunning displays from Barnsley College, Doncaster College, Bradford College, Leeds City College, Sheffield College and Rotherham College of Arts and Technology. The colleges were able to give visitors a real flavour of what they could achieve and the range of courses offered.

Andrew Coates from organisers Prospects Events always enjoys the great atmosphere at these interactive skills festivals

“Prospects Events were delighted to be back in Sheffield for Skills Yorkshire and the Humber, the enthusiasm of the students is always overwhelming. We honestly believe that giving young people a chance to try out a career in a fun way really helps them learn and make informed choices.”

“Some of the most effective learning tools are the ones that engage the visitors, the ones they remember; it could be University of Huddersfield’s racing car, the giant aircraft exhaust from Doncasters Ltd or the crying baby with Sheffield Information Link. Events like this are all about inspiration and helping visitors realise what their options are, whether the route they choose is an Apprenticeship, a job, further or higher education or other opportunity.”

“Skills Yorkshire and the Humber 2009 had a wide range of exhibitors and we thank them all and our sponsors the National Apprenticeship Service for all their hard work in ensuring every visitor has an inspirational experience.”

Being able to meet employers and colleges face to face is a real benefit to young visitors, and the trip to Skills Yorkshire and the Humber will be a lesson that many will remember a long time after they leave the classroom. Showcasing many top regional and national organisations young people enjoyed the chance to interact whilst exploring their options.

Exhibitors were full of praise for this the second Skills Yorkshire and the Humber event and are excited about ensuring the event remains an annual feature for the region. The event will return to Sheffield Arena on 29 and 30 September 2010.
